Restaurant holds fundraiser
As members of the tourist industry in San Pedro, Caye Caulker and even Placencia clean up from damage to their piers and get ready for the start of the tourist season, one restaurateur in Belize City is counting his blessings that his outdoor establishment is still here and in excellent shape. David Gegg and his family have come up with a unique way of showing their gratitude and helping out those who were not so fortunate. The proceeds from every meal sold at the Smoky Mermaid this Sunday –breakfast, lunch and dinner — will go to hurricane victims in Central America through a cash donation to the Belize Red Cross.
David Gegg, Owner, Smoky Mermaid
“Discovery Expeditions, through its restaurant affiliate Smoky Mermaid will be sponsoring a day of thanksgiving on Sunday with a view to raising funds for the victims in Central America who have been affected by Mitch. The event is being held under the patronage of the honorable Prime Minister Said Musa and Mrs. Musa. We are extremely grateful to him for participating and I would also like to say that the vendors of the Smoky Mermaid have also agreed to contribute the ingredients for the day to really make this an effort for the community to come out and support the unfortunate victims of the hurricane.
I think it would be great if other people in the tourist business and the restaurant business would do something similar. You know last week we saw that bullet coming straight for us at one hundred and eighty miles an hour and really we are extremely lucky we are still in business. It could have been a lot worse. So I think the entire country should do what we can to show our gratitude to the good Lord for having been spared and let’s try to do something good for others.”
The Smoky Mermaid is asking that anyone interested who would like to join in on their Thanksgiving Sunday make reservations to ensure they can be seated.
