Police Crime Fighting Strategy Kept the Peace in August
The month of August saw a significant decrease in murders, especially gang related murders, in the Old Capital. ComPol Williams spoke about the department’s crime fighting strategy in this regard and how increasing police presence in gang-ridden areas across the city has improved safety for residence.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Certainly, our crime fighting strategy is working. You would know that Belize is the epicenter of murders and so our strategy is to see how best we can hold down Belize City. Once we can do that we can hold down the trend countrywide. Again, you can see that the type of murders that we would accustomed to seeing are no more, at least for now. These I refer to as silly murders are what is bothering us at this time. We have for example, the murder in Bella Vista in the South, where the young man was walking the lady home and her ex came and inflicted chop wounds to him leading to his death. These are type of murders the policing effort will not be able to prevent. We just have to learnt o live with them and try our best to work on those that we regard as being preventable. In that respect we are doing the best we can. But, we are not going to sing praises as yet. There is still a long way to go and the potential for violence within our society, particularly Belize City is still extremely strong. So, we need to ensure that we maintain our presence in these gang ridden areas.”
