Woman raped in San Pedro

On the night of October twenty sixth, when most residents of San Pedro Town were trying to evacuate due to the threat of Hurricane Mitch, one American tourist was fighting for her life. Not from a hurricane, but from an intruder who came knocking at her apartment door at nine thirty that Monday night. Police say that shortly after the woman opened the door, a dark man grabbed her, covered her mouth and forced the fifty-six year old woman into the bedroom. There, police say the victim tried to get the man to leave by giving him four hundred Belize dollars and one thousand, three hundred U.S. dollars. The attacker, however, after taking the money did not leave but raped the woman and then ran off. San Pedro police say they have since detained a number of persons but no one has been arrested at this point.
