Identities of two washed ashore still unknown

San Pedro police are still trying to determine the identities of the two bodies found on the island last week Monday and Tuesday. The bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition. At this time the police do not suspect foul play but rather they are looking at two possibilities as to how they could have been washed ashore. Reports are that on October twenty sixth, two Mexicans and an American were travelling in a boat somewhere between Chetumal and Xcalak. About thirty-five miles from San Pedro Town, they encountered rough seas due to hurricane Mitch and capsized. While one of the corpses matches the description of the missing American man, the other body is believed to be that of an elderly Mexican man who was aboard another boat that also capsized while traveling in the same area. Police say they have received reports that one day earlier, on October twenty fifth, a young Mexican boy and an older man were thrown overboard, after the vessel was overcome by the high seas. Since then, the boy is the only individual who has been rescued at sea. Police say because of the deteriorating condition the bodies were in, they had to go ahead and bury the remains in the island’s cemetery. In the meantime, the police say their investigation into the matter continues and are asking anyone who can assist them in the identification of the men to please come forward.
