International agencies offer disaster relief to Belize
While Belize’s suffering is not great compared to some of our neighbors, the costs of the week long disaster preparedness exercise were still not inconsequential. To ease some of that burden a number of friendly nations and organizations have announced contributions to help defray the expenses of government and local relief agencies. This morning the Inter-American Development Bank signed a commitment to provide fifty thousand U.S. dollars to the Belize Red Cross, while other grants to government include twenty thousand U.S. from the OAS, thirty six thousand from UNICEF, twenty thousand from PAHO, fifty thousand from U.N.D.P. and twenty-five thousand from the United States of America. Other donors are awaiting a full assessment by the Evaluation of Damage Sub-Committee of NEMO.
