Honduran Ambassador asks Belizeans to help
We’ve watched the images in horror over the past several days and now it is time to lend a hand to neighbors devastated by Hurricane Mitch. Today the Honduran Ambassador to Belize Oscar Bueso thanked Belizeans for their open hearts and sympathy but now he asks them to come forward and help the relief effort in a tangible way. He spoke to News Five with the help of interpreter Jeronimo Mangroo.

“As we got the news from Honduras we immediately contacted the Hondurans residing in Belize, the government of Belize, the Prime Minister Said Musa. Also I just finished an interview with the chief of the army, who will help, lend cooperation to the reconstruction of Honduras.
About seventy percent complete destruction. At this moment we have seven thousand dead, eighty thousand disappeared, six hundred thousand deminificated, under shelter, with no homes.
The most important thing right now in Honduras is antibiotics and things related to infectious diseases and stuff like that. I appreciate the food, but canned goods because of the lack of energy and the majority of the place is underwater so they can’t use the kitchens. So the most practical thing is in cans.”
Ambassador Bueso says that the Honduran people have been set back at least forty years by this storm, but with the cooperation of Belizeans and other Central Americans the process will be sped up considerably. Tomorrow there will be a donation drive at the Honduran Embassy on Gabourel Lane. Anyone wishing to give canned food or clothing can bring the items by between eight and four p.m.
