Number of Belizeans Illegally Crossing into Mexico on the Rise
Since the land borders and sea ports reopened in February, there has been a significant number of irregular migrations into Mexico, prompting Mexican authorities to quickly step in and repatriate illegal migrants back to Belize. Ambassador Arnold says that sometimes minors are caught up in these circumstances because of the decisions of their parents or guardians and then added measures have to be followed to ensure their wellbeing and protection.
Oscar Arnold, Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico
“I think we had one as recent as last week Thursday and that case, I think a family member had put it out first on social media and then it gained traction from there and we had received reports from the immigration authorities here in Quintana Roo and then from their federal side of the government that we did have an individual who was held but who would have been repatriated and I think now he’s back home. We do have as well some minors who have been caught up in the system, traveling along with their parents and whenever those instances come up, then we usually get in touch with the Human Development Office and the office that is responsible for that on the Belize side and try to coordinate their repatriation as well. I will however, try to encourage Belizeans, if you’re going to cross the borders, please do so formally. Please check in at the immigration on the Belize side as well as on the Mexican side. That way we have a record if in the event we have anything that takes place. The embassy and the consulates across Mexico can be of assistance.”
