On Friday, San Ignacio police arrested and charged twenty-two-year-old Christian Kelly for the crime of murder, in the wake of a deadly Independence Day stabbing at the Macal River Park. Police believe that the resident of Roman Catholic Street was responsible for inflicting the fatal injuries on Matthew Smith, a twenty-nine-year-old Belize City resident who moved to San Ignacio for work.

“Investigators ended up charging a person that they had detained from the onset, who was just bringing more than one versions of his whereabouts and his involvement in the fight that took place at the Macal [River] Park. So I know it’s a young man, Kelly. He has since been charged and arraigned.”
