James Adderley with weekend sports
Good evening I’m James Adderley and welcome to this Tuesday edition of Sports Monday. With its first win in the B.F.L. football season coming last weekend at the M.C.C. Grounds, the city based team Acros looked to make it two in a row at that same venue Sunday when they played host to the defending national champion Juventus of Orange Walk.
As soon as things get underway it’s Juventus attacking off the left wing by way of Deon Flowers. Downfield Raul Cabrera tries to get Acros on to the scoreboard but this left foot, in heavy traffic, sails outside of target. This shot from off the right wing creates excitement for the Acros fans but actually it’s a goal they’re looking for. It’s some twenty minutes in when Raul Cabrera lines up behind this spot kick and the left foot launch tangles into the net to give Acros the 1-zip lead. Of course this changes the ballgame as demonstrated by Edmond “The Buzzard” Pandy and Marcelino Tun and fortunately referee David Jones steps on it. Strangely enough the Acros defense tries its best to give up the equalizer here but Juventus can’t capitalize. By the way Raul Celis, this hand wouldn’t get pass a blind man and it doesn’t. Juventus creates real pressure when John Brooks is forced to tap this ball out but if it wasn’t in John Trapp, it wouldn’t have been a tied ballgame going into intermission.
In second half play Juventus comes out searching as Flowers and Hendricks combine but the finish is lacking. This might be an act of desperation here by Raul Celis against Pandy, but that’s as dangerous as a runaway train for which he gets chased and deservedly so. Moments later Marcelino Tun is mauled by number 6 of Acros which allows referee Jones to discontinue the Acros numerical advantage.
With this corner kick, there’s nobody guarding Oliver Hendricks, his header crashes into the net and we have a tied ball game. Hendricks could give Juventus the lead on this press but he fails to deliver with this punch. Meanwhile folks Eric Dons displays real unsportsmanlike attitude here when he mercilessly cuts Marcelino down for which he gets red carded.
Again it’s Juventus on the attack with this center from Flowers but Deon Flowers fouls the keeper and referee Jones nullifies his previous goal call after consulting with his lineman. Unfortunately for football fans this kind of reaction has become very unwelcome but it’s a result of a breakdown of administration and security and we’re certainly glad it ended with nobody making a run for the hospital or the police station. In the end the score that really mattered showed Acros 1, Juventus 1 and yes the B.F.L. you will have to do something sooner rather than later.
In other football news La Victoria hurt Yabra 1-zip; Jube dumped Southern United 4-2; Sagitun burned Verdes 1-nil while Builders Hardware of Belmopan blanked Dangriga 2-zip.
We also wanna tell you that yes, the Henry Usher Marathon is still on. It will be held on Sunday October eighteenth at 6:30 a.m. It starts at the National Stadium. They are looking for someone to take inside the Olympic Games come the year 2000. They will be going to Japan to train. Yeah, we’ll keep you posted right here on Channel 5.
And that’s it. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
