NEMO Monitoring P.T.C -13’s Projected Path to Central America

The National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is monitoring a potential tropical cyclone located just north of Venezuela. Referred to as P.T.C 13, the system is moving westward at fifteen miles per hour and is likely to make landfall in Nicaragua and Honduras by Sunday morning. NEMO’s latest advisory says the system is expected to weaken rapidly as it moves over mountainous terrain, after it makes landfall. In that event, it is not expected that Belize will be affected by strong winds. However, NEMO noted that Belize will likely experience heavy rainfall and flooding especially in southern Belize. The potential tropical cyclone is expected to strengthen when it moves over the south western Caribbean Sea over the next couple of days.  NEMO says, rainfall amounts are likely to peak on Monday with daily totals of about four to six inches or higher. Rain is expected before the system makes landfall which could lead to flooding. In a worst case scenario, the center of the system could change its current trajectory more towards the north. In this event, a hurricane would make landfall in Belize by Monday. But, according to NEMO’s latest advisory this is a less likely scenario. They are advising Belizeans to review their family emergency plans and to check on the elderly and people with disabilities. NEMO is also advising against out district travel for the long weekend.
