Charity group plans swim across Corozal Bay

Story Picture
Plans are well underway for another swimming expedition across the Corozal Bay. The four mile swim, which is scheduled for October eleventh, is being organized by Swim Across Belize Outstanding Relief, SABOR. The group was formed shortly after the first swim across the bay last March which raised five thousand dollars to assist the Belize Cancer Society. This time around all the proceeds of the event will go to the Corozal Hospital Auxiliary to buy a standby generator. To find out more about what will be taking place on October eleventh, we spoke with SABOR’s president, Manuel Lizarraga and secretary, Charles McSweeney.

Charles McSweeney, Secretary, SABOR

“It is going to be a day filled with activities that can be enjoyed by the entire family, but the main focus will be on the swimming because that’s what SABOR does. And we are going to be having this swim which will be about four and a half miles from Cerros to Miami Beach and we are going to have the same distance but with relay teams.

So some people who have asked if they can swim, you know have expressed that they can’t do the whole four and a half miles. So we have organized to have teams of twelve swimming the four and a half miles. So we’ll have a couple of relays along the swim and along with that there will be games for the children to play. So if you want to bring your kids out, they can swim or if they don’t want to swim, whatever, there will be games for them to play and the hospital auxiliary of Corozal is working with us. So we can have games and stuff and the Corozal Town Board has been helping us with a number of other things. So we will have games for the children, a lot of activities for the children and a lot for the adults.”

Manuel Lizarraga, President, SABOR

“The bay will be filled with swimmers but it will also be filled with boats and in fact we will be having a canoe race. The canoes will serve as a dual purpose: they will act as security for the swimmers, as well they will partake in the canoe race and some people like to see canoe race. So we are catering to everyone on that day.”

While there will be no cover charge, you will need to pay for the games you wish to play. The fun gets underway at nine o’clock on Sunday morning on October eleventh.
