D.O.E. to Check in on Businesses that Store Hazardous Materials

On Thursday night, we aired the story of an oil spill at Westline Bus Company in Benque Viejo del Carmen. In the wake of the incident and the flooding, an advisory has been issued by the Department of Environment reiterating the protocols guiding the storage of industrial chemicals, pesticides and hazardous materials. Those guidelines are contained in the Environmental Protection Act. In an interview with Chief Executive Officer Doctor Kenrick Williams of the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management, he says that a team from the Department of Environment will inspect other businesses with similar storage equipment to ensure that there is compliance.

“We’ve also served notice to remind the public that there are criteria of the storage containers that are used for these type of waste oil so as to follow the law and be in compliance with the law. Naturally, as usual, unfortunately because of our limited resource we have to be reactionary in some cases. And so, we are putting out the spill, but we also have a sense of where some of the priorities in terms of these storage containers exist across the country and so we’ve asked the team to go out and do some monitoring and checks on some of these waste oil storage containers and other oil storage containers so as to not have this type of replication.”
