Nicholi Rhys Walks from Murder Charge

Nicholi Rhys

Thirty-one-year-old Nicholi Rhys beat a murder charge in court earlier today, after spending almost four years on pretrial detention at the Belize Central Prison.  Rhys was accused of the shooting death of Jose Moh, a cab driver who was killed near the Eight Mile community.  Represented by attorney Leeroy Banner, a no case submission was entered on Rhys’ behalf which Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft upheld.  It is alleged that on May twenty-first, 2018, Moh was called to pick up a fare at New Asia Restaurant.  The taxi man was with his girlfriend when he went to pick up the passenger on Vernon Street.  While en route to Mile Eight, Moh was asked to pick up another customer whom he drove to a destination where he was killed.  Moh’s girlfriend escaped unharmed and the prime suspect was identified as Nicholi Rhys.  In court, the crown was unable locate Moh’s girlfriend to testify in the case.  The crown submitted that all attempts to locate her were futile.  Justice Sandcroft, in arriving at his decision, agreed that all reasonable steps were not taken by the police to locate the primary witness, subsequently upholding the no case submission.
