School for deaf holds open house

Saturday marked the beginning of the second annual Deaf Awareness Week and today the Belize School for the Deaf held an open day.

The exhibition, the second for the Belize School For the Deaf, highlights the students’ work done during the past year.

“We are showing what the school has to offer, what the students are capable of doing. We are showing some of the different things that help the deaf to get along in society.

We have dancers, males as well as females. They have traveled a lot. They will be travelling to the Bahamas in November to perform in the Festival for the Deaf. We have won a lot of Festival of Arts Awards, so we are very proud of our dance group.”

One way the school is looking to strengthen a working relationship with the public is by offering a course on sign language. Anna Sambula, who is a teacher at the school, interpreted for Wayne Mitchell, the course’s instructor.

“He said that sign language is as easy as ABC Example: hello, mother, father, how are you? It’s very easy, it’s not hard. It’s by showing you can learn by yourself.”

The Open Day is part of activities commemorating Deaf Awareness Week, which comes to a close on Saturday, October third.
