Hurricane damage to Eastern Caribbean is heavy
In the American media the damage has been overshadowed by its continuing threat to U.S. territories and mainland, but several islands of the Eastern Caribbean were severely battered by Hurricane Georges. The pictures on your screen are from Antigua, where the storm killed two people and severely injured five. Two thousand Antiguans are homeless, electricity has still not been restored and half the island’s phones are out of service. The devastation was worse on nearby St. Kitts where Prime Minister Denzil Douglas estimates that fifty percent of the sugar crop will be lost and over six thousand workers are out of a job. Damage was most severe in the tourism, health and agriculture sectors. For more complete details on how Georges affected the Eastern Caribbean tune in to Caribbean Newsline at ten thirty.
