Toledo student wins full scholarship to Canada

A Belizean student from Toledo has won a four year undergraduate scholarship at Queen’s University in Canada. Celestino Oh, from San Pedro Columbia, was the fourth person from the Caribbean this year to receive the Scotiabank Merit Scholarship. A release from the bank says Oh was given the scholarship for his outstanding academic achievement, including his extra-curricular activities, in addition to an essay he had submitted, detailing his commitment to the social and economic development of the country. Oh, a graduate of St. John’s College Sixth Form, is in the first year of the Business Administration program at Ontario’s Queen’s University. The scholarship is valued at twenty thousand Canadian dollars – that’s roughly twenty five thousand Belize dollars – per year and is renewable annually for the duration of the four-year undergraduate program. A major requirement for keeping the scholarship, which covers tuition, books and a living allowance, is that the recipient maintains a first class standing. The Scotiabank Merit Scholarship was established in 1995 to reflect the institution’s commitment to the social and economic development of the region. It is available to students from the twenty-four Caribbean countries where the bank operates.
