Sports with James Adderley
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcome to this fresh portion of Sports Monday. Sunday, the day before Independence Day brought B.F.L. soccer to the M.C.C. Grounds as city based Acros played host to Sagitun Football Club of Mango Creek.
In the opening minutes it’s Acros on the attack but what looks like a breakaway by number 11, ultimately results in a miscue. It’s some 24 minutes deep when Acros defender, number 21, Crain Michael takes down to the Sagitun striker inside the 18 and referee Ruperto Vicente rules penalty. Sagitun sends for number 8 and while the penalty launch lacks power it crashes into the back of the net to give the Mango Creek team a 1-zip lead. At the other end, Eldrid “Puntus” Gentle mounds a pretty individual effort. Alas there’s nobody up front to finish the play and at the half Sagitun F.C. boasts a 1-zip lead.
Out of the locker room, Sagitun returns displaying good ball works but the subsequent shot is handled, although precariously, by the Acros keeper. Meanwhile folks, Darren Hinds might have said a bad word as he gets chased off the field by Ruperto Vicente reducing the Mango Creek team to 10 men. Sagitun nevertheless could extend the lead here but the launch by number 22 goes into orbit. Seems to be all Sagitun in this one folks, and maybe Brent Burgess should have coveted this one – he gets help from his teammate but the bad already committed the turnover with a hand foul.
Brent Burgess, in heavy traffic, pushes this right foot that gets pass the Acros keeper and just like that it’s a 2-zip Sagitun lead. When John Trapp gets taken down here inside the 18, referee Vicente rules penalty – the second of the ball game. Martin Nolberto steps up and Acros finally makes it on to the scoreboard. Sagitun responds immediately getting a one on one situation for number 22 with the Acros keeper, but it’s a tale of a feeble shot easily handled. But nevertheless Sagitun goes on to post the 2-1 big “W” to upstage Acros in front of the Belize City fans.
Meanwhile folks, the Independence Day spirit brought out a showdown between veteran players from the U.S. and the guys who maintain the home front. Maybe you’ll recognize the names: Rupert Anderson, “The Mugger,” “Bi,” “Cattouse,” “Girl I Love You,” “Patatu” Cuthkelvin and of course “Coro” and Rickie Gongora. This goal by “The Mugger,” somehow he gets it into the back of the net in this 4-2 Bel-Bel win over Bel-Am.
Finally folks when you’re the man, you’re the man. Fresh off his Mr. Belize victory, Rushiel Bevans traveled to the Central American and Caribbean Body Building Championship over the weekend at El Salvador and he grabbed his second gold medal, this time in the light/heavy weight class. Miss Fitness ’98, Lurnette Sankey won silver in the female middleweight class, while Deon Danderson picked up silver at the welterweight class. Congrats to all.
That’s it. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
