Another Late Start to Sugar Crop Anticipated This Year

The last sugar crop opened late and translated into some losses for cane farmers. The reason was twofold. There was inclement weather and also, there was only one mill operating at Belize Sugar Industries Ltd. The projection for the new sugar crop, provided that there will be a new signed agreement between both parties,  is that there will be another late start this year, as the chairman of the association shared.

“The expectation this year is to start in December, so that is why it is important to remark that there should be an agreement in place for the crop to start on time. What date in December, we are not sure, but it should start in December to accommodate all that cane that stayed on the field this year. The factory itself was giving problems they brought down – and we will face similar problems this year because one of the generators of the BelCoGen plant that feeds the mill was remanufactured last year, and the other one is being worked this year. So the expected time for it to start working at a hundred percent is pretty much the same as last year.”
