Acting Mayor says deadlock will soon be broken

The weeklong deadlock at City hall over a successor to Mayor Jose Coye may soon be over. Acting Mayor Marshall Nuñez says the stalemate will be resolved shortly and without ministerial intervention. Nuñez told News Five that while the business of governing the City continues uninterrupted, he would prefer to have the job of Mayor full-time, rather than in a caretaker capacity until elections in March of next year.

“It’s not all that bad. It keeps us on our P’s and Q’s and I think, within the council we are a responsible, mature group of people; we will be able to resolve that in-house. That does not distract me from doing the work, as I continue to act as the Mayor in here. We continue to get the work done and that is something that will be cleared up in a little while, but it does not distract from getting the actual work done. There was speculation over the week by the media that the minister will come in and appoint, that is not so. The law provides for us in-house to take care of it and I think that will happen. In fact I’m confident that in-house, we will be able to resolve that, and shortly.”

Nuñez says the current cash flow difficulties that the Council is faced with are expected to be relieved shortly. That improvement may be due in part to government’s release of subvention money that was previously withheld by the past administration as well as the seasonal upswing in the collection of taxes.
