Belize Rural South Area Representative Says San Pedro and Caye Caulker Residents Know How to Prepare for Hurricanes

Andre Perez

The threat of Hurricane Lisa on Belize puts the coastal communities of San Pedro and Caulker in the projected path that the hurricane is supposed to cross. The islands remain vulnerable to flooding and strong winds associated with a category one hurricane. Belize Rural South Area Representative, Andre Perez, who is also the Minister of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, told reporters today that the islanders have had enough experience dealing with these kinds of natural disasters, so they are quite alert and ready to take action.

Andre Perez, Area Representative, Belize Rural South

“The people of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker have very much experience in dealing with these storms. We do not get goosy-loosey with all this focus. We know what to do and we’re having the meeting and make decisions based on what is coming to us. For now we’re asking everyone to be vigilant. We have the local radio station that I’ll be speaking over with our people, so we have direct contact. The important thing is that we all work together. It’s not only my ministry. IT has to be both councils, the village council and town council, we have members from the private sector that come in and work along together and of course the Government of Belize and we’re ready. We know how to do this; we’ve done it before and if we take the steps. If evacuation needs to occur by tomorrow, we’re doing it. I already got information that by tomorrow we’ll have to make a decision to close it down.”
