Hazards to Expect During a Category One Hurricane

A weather system with the strength that Lisa will bring along with it is expected to cause damage to some trees, lamp posts, roofs and weaker structures. It is also expected to bring with it a storm surge of between three and five feet along coastal areas. Today Chief Meteorologist, Ronald Gordon cautioned that wind velocity is also a major factor and people need to take heed.

“In terms of winds, a category one hurricane carries winds of about seventy four to ninety five miles an hour. The system is expected to come in with sustained winds of eighty miles per hour at the moment, but gusting to above that value. So, certainly wind is a significant hazard. That will damage homes. Some structures will completely destroyed depending on the type of structures you are talking about. Roofs can be lifted. So, certainly this is a storm we need to take serious as it approaches us. The rainfall will lead to localized flooding over low lying and flood prone areas of the country, including Belize City, flash flooding over the mountainous terrains especially in the south. So, certainly does are some for the hazards we are expecting from these system.”
