St. Martins De Porres receives sporting equipment…

Story PictureSt. Martin de Porres is one of the neediest schools in the City that for years has not been able to participate in the primary school competitions due to lack of proper sporting equipment. But their luck turned today when they received some well-needed equipment donated by the National Sports Council through its assistance programme. Director of Sports Vandley Jenkins says he was happy to assist the school.

“We’ve been trying to encourage the participation in the national primary school program and we learnt that this school has not been taking part due to the lack of equipments. I was told by the principal that the children have a lot of skills in terms of sports but are not able to participate because the lack of equipments. And so it’s a gesture to say to them that we are encouraging you to take time in the program. Sports is an important part of our total development and we want to encourage the children to take part in the sports program. There is a variety of equipments. We’ve given them mitts, softball, we’ve given them football, we’ve given them a basketball, we’ve thrown in volleyball nets, we’ve thrown in some ping pong just a variety of equipments.”

“Our kids will be able to participate in sports. Last year we didn’t have any equipment and because of that we’ve haven’t been participating since then.”

The Sports Program for Primary Schools consists of five disciplines which include softball, football, basketball, volleyball and track and field.
