278 Persons Remain in Shelters across the Country
Hurricane shelters remained open across Belize City today for residence whose homes have been completely destroyed. Prime Minister Briceño confirmed earlier that two hundred and seventy-eight persons are in shelters across the country. As of midday, thirty- two individuals from the Gungulung community remained in shelter at Saint Luke Methodist Primary School on Mahogany Street. We spoke to one single mother who has sought refuge with her three children.

“Well my roof completely gone. My kids room destroyed, because when the roof blow off the things I had in side completely damaged, like deh bed, deh lee bit a uniform, and clothes, personal belongs, my bathroom gone. And, eena the yard, trees and all kinda things deh bout.”

“Terrible because I nuh have no help. I lost a house five years ago by fire. The government and different people tell me deh can’t do nothing because dah personal things. Alright, wah hurricane comes now. I wah sih if I wah get any assistance now because that dah the excuse deh use the last time. If dah wah natural disaster we wah help you. Unu please help mih now mein. This dah my daughter, I nuh know when school wah open back but I woulda want be prepared back again at least by Monday fih seh I responsible enough. I fight through this. I reach back pan my foot, my pikni could guh back dah school. Deh wah got clothes dry and everything. Come on mien I need a lee assistance.”

“When I went to check my place the whole roof gone. Seems like I have to stay here again a next night. I nuh deh pan that. I wah guh fix my house. I wah somebody guh help me fix my house.”

“I thank god that we make the right the decision. Part of my house gone suh I think dah the best decision I mek. Mih sink deh blow off, mih siding gone. Mih daughter house destroyed, everything gone water damage. I have a shop weh actually destroyed to. That dah weh I mek my one two dollars yes.”
