House ransacked while owner visits States

In other crime news last week we were called to the home of a viewer in Belize City, where I discovered that the word burglary has taken on a new meaning.

Sixty nine year old Gwen Barnhart, who suffers with severe rheumatoid arthritis, had left the country last October to seek medical attention abroad, but while Barnhart was away, burglars took advantage of the situation and actually moved into the one bedroom building at number 2A Sarstoon Street, leaving it totally ransacked. There was nothing that was left unturned, as the thieves took what they could… and what they left behind, they destroyed.

“I couldn’t think that people would be so mean, none at all. I expected that they would have gone with stuff but not the way they do. What they didn’t take, they tear up and cut up. I wasn’t expecting that.”

It is believed the burglars used a young child to gain entrance through this broken window that is located to the back of the house. Today, Barnhart is left picking up the pieces and hoping to start all over again.

“Well, pray and help the good Lord to help me, to do the best I can and go to my children. And I don’t want to stay in the house for a while cause there is too much memories you know. I made so much barriers, so they don’t jump my fence. I have nails on the fence, cactus with prickles.”

Most of Barnhart’s electrical appliances, including TVs, radios, fans, microwave, a sewing machine, pillows, sheets, clothes, dinnerware, a coffee pot and blender were stolen.

No one has yet been arrested for the burglary.
