Kim Vasquez is Named Director of ICA

A new director has been named at the Institute of Creative Arts. Kim Vasquez has been operating as the Acting Director of ICA for the past two years. She has now been named the official director of ICA. She is no stranger to creative arts in Belize. In 2009, Vasquez joined the Institute of Creative Arts as a screenwriter and video producer. In 2011 she transferred to ICA’s program department where her focus was on youth development through programs such as the National Festival of Arts and ICA Summer Arts Institute. In her new role, Vasquez must work to revive the fading institute. She spoke with us about how she intends to do just that.

“It is a great honor to step into the position. As you said, I have been holding over for the past two years. That was a challenging period most certainly. But, I am pleased to say we were able to keep ICA going and a lot of our key programs at the same time. Definitely we have a lot of work ahead of us and one of the things on the top of the list is to rebuild the institute to re-staff so that we can continue to expand the work we have been doing. We also need to expand beyond the Bliss Center and to get back our footing within the districts as well. So, we look forward to having that ICA presence not only in Belize City but across the country. The immediate goal is to continue the work we have been doing, to create that enabling environment for artist and creative to gradually work as well to not only recognizing them for the value of their work,  the arts and culture, the value of arts and culture, and start moving towards the development of a creative economy.”
