Santander’s Sugar Quality Yet to Be Assessed Following Hurricane Lisa
We also asked Burke whether the company is concerned about the quality of the sugarcane in the field given its exposure to flood waters and strong winds. Here is what she had to say.
Beverly Burke, Public Relations Manager, Santander
“We work on production, we work on the quality of the cane and what it’s going to yield. So, if it is indeed that the cane is impacted severely based on the fact that it was completely down on its side and for a couple of days just sitting in water, it might impact that, however we will not be able to speak directly until we actually start the harvesting, because once the harvest season officially begins, and this year we are planning on starting very early, we will then know exactly what that impact is. We are hoping that it is nothing major, in terms of the quality of the cane and the quality of the sugar we can yield, so that will take us some time to know exactly.”
