And while the “que vivas” were flowing on Queen Street, around the corner the mood on Daly Street was considerably less upbeat. Still, the defeated U.D.P. leader, in reading a prepared statement, made it clear that retirement is not a likely option.
Manuel Esquivel, Leader, U.D.P.
“This is a statement coming from myself and the party that the Belizean people have now spoken and they have chosen to elect a new government of the People’s United Party. We congratulate the new Prime Minister and his party on their victory and we wish them well, as they take on the many challenges facing the Belizean people.
To the thousands of Belizeans who came out to vote, we say thank you, for your important contribution to the democratic process. To our faithful supporters, who campaigned for our candidates, or who came out to vote for us, we say a very big thank you. Your support is invaluable to us. Your United Democratic Party pledges to continue to stand by you, just as you have stood by us. The U.D.P. representatives in the House, and in the Senate will vigorously defend your rights and aggressively campaign to promote good and decent government.
I pledge on behalf of the party, to immediately begin the work of preparing the party to once more take over the reigns of government at the first opportunity. With God’s help, and your faithful support, we shall emerge victorious again. May God bless us all and God bless Belize.”
