Gang Tensions in Antelope Street Extension Area Continues
Tension amongst feuding gangs within the Antelope Street Extension area continues to pose a challenge to the Belize Police Department. Over the last few days, there have been numerous reports of gunshots in the area. While the L.I.U. continues to collaborate with police in the area, they have not had much success in bringing all parties to the table for mediation. Minister Musa admits that some areas within the city are much more difficult to police than others.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
“Certain areas are more difficult as you rightfully mentioned, in terms of settling dispute and conflict resolution. I know that Mr. Dawson and his team are relentless in their efforts and I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that they have quelled so many disputes between warring factions, even in that Lake-I area between PIV and BLC, and you are perfectly right, one misstep can totally turn things around and it takes a lot of daily intervention, minute by minute intervention on behalf of the LIU to keep that peace. But, indeed in the Antelope Street Extension that is one of them that is proving a little bit difficult. But, like I said their team continues on the ground on a daily basis to meet with these individuals to see how it is that we can broker that peace and maintain that peace.”
