Basketball team returns with 2-4 record

Story Picture
Our athletes are back from Maracaibo, Venezuela and although they didn’t bring home any medals, there were a few bright moments. The twelve-member basketball team won two games: sixty-six to sixty-one against Mexico and an eighty-three to eighty victory against Puerto Rico. They narrowly lost to Panama, the Dominican Republic and the most painful of all defeats, to host country Venezuela. According to star player Milton Palacio he will take a lot of international basketball experience back to school with him tomorrow.

Milton Palacio, Player

“We gave them our all and we never stopped quitting or whatever. And you know some of the other teams were together longer than we were, but we have experience to take with us. We gave it our all and those heart breakers were kinda hard to take.”

David Greenwood, Coach

“The most heartbreaking loss was to one of our players. We were up by one and one of our men nearly broke his foot. Dwight Myvette is going to be in a cast and without him we couldn’t win the bout.”

Dwight Myvette, Player

“It was tough games but we could not touch Panama. They were big and had big guys but we did well. The coach did well with the small team that we had.”

Milton Palacio

“It was a lot of competition and the twelve guys that we have are great, not knowing what we were up against, you know. The first night we got out there we were so close to knocking off the host team and it was good; we had fun.”

David Greenwood

“The only team we couldn’t be competitive with was Panama because they were too physically imposing. Most of the teams feared us. The good thing about it was Belize walked out with respect and now they know to look for us next time.”

The rest of the fifty-two member Belizean contingent, including the male volleyball team, track team, karate and cycling teams arrived today as well.
