Escandar Bedran dead at 75
His was a household name in the Cayo District and indeed the entire nation of Belize. It is therefore with great regret that we note the passing of Escandar Bedran. Bedran, one of the country’s most active and far sighted businessmen, died Sunday night in the San Ignacio Hospital after battling a series of illnesses. The seventy five year old resident of San Ignacio had been involved in a number of enterprises over the years including farming, ranching, construction and commerce, often along with members of his family. But Bedran will probably be most remembered for his decision in 1976 to construct the San Ignacio Hotel. At that time tourism was virtually unknown in Cayo and Bedran was told by many so called experts that the project could never work. Over two decades later both the hotel and tourism in the Cayo District are thriving. Escandar Bedran: dead at seventy-five.
