Two dead as car collides with horse and cart in Corozal

A Belizean tour guide and farmer are dead after a car and a horse driven cart collided in the Corozal District. The accident happened on a dirt road, a half-mile off the Northern Highway in Santa Clara Village. While reports at this time are still sketchy, police say sometime between five thirty and six thirty Wednesday evening, Francisco Cho and Gobersindo Santoya, had just left their San Roman Village farm in the cart and were heading out to the main highway, when they were suddenly struck from behind by a small, four door Nissan car, driven by twenty-six year old tour guide Jesus Hernandez. Cho, who survived the crash, reported that he and Santoya were both flung from the cart. When Cho regained consciousness, he saw Santoya lying face up apparently dead. Just a few yards away, he observed the body of Hernandez lying across the road, also dead. Police say when they visited the scene, they observed that Hernandez was bleeding from his ears, nose and mouth and from the back of his head, while Santoya had a fractured right foot and severe head and body injuries. Both men apparently died on the spot. Police at this time are not sure if Hernandez, a Belizean who lives in Cancun, Mexico, was driving the car, but suspect that whoever was behind the wheel was drunk and speeding. Police investigations continue.
