Public Sector Workers Trust Launches Food Assistance Project

As the country continues to recover from the impact of Hurricane Lisa, a little over three weeks ago, the gaps in basic needs are being exposed. Earlier this week, we showed you the handing over of food supplies by a group of Asian businessmen from Stann Creek to the Belize City Council to assist families finding it difficult to return to normalcy. The Public Sector Workers Trust is doing the same and has just announced the start of its food assistance program.  The program is in response to an online survey which indicated that four in every ten persons in its membership have been affected by the steady increase in prices of goods and services. Today News Five spoke with Trustee, Doctor Philip Castillo about the project.

“The trustees met and we decided on a food assistance project and basically what this project is that we have partnered with supermarkets countrywide and the aim is that we provide a basket of food and groceries to every single beneficiary. The maximum value of the basket is a hundred and fifty dollars and it excludes alcohol and cigarette products. We have an ongoing online survey and I think it was thirty-eight or thirty-nine percent of respondents on our ongoing survey said that they are experiencing food challenges with purchasing food and groceries, etc. Bear in mind that most of our beneficiaries are retired public officers who may be living on their pension cheques alone.”

“Sir, how many persons stand to benefit from this project?”

Dr. Philip Castillo

“Well we have a beneficiary listing of around ten thousand. Unfortunately some have passed on; some are not in the country. So we are hoping maybe around six seven thousand beneficiaries can access this project.”
