Scouts return from Taiwan jamboree

Story Picture
Returning to Belize last Friday were five members of the Scout Association of Belize. The young men and women, who come from various scout groups in Belize City and Cayo, spent eight days in Taiwan participating in activities marking the twentieth Asia/Pacific and the eighth Scouts of China Jamboree. According to the group’s leader, Orlando Garcia, it was the first time Belize was invited to the annual event.

Orlando Garcia, Contingent Leader

“The whole purpose was for us to participate and experience. I must say experience what their jamboree is like. I must say that our contingent really enjoyed all the activities in which they participated and no doubt they learnt a lot of which it is my hope that they will implement it here in Belize and in their various scout groups.”

Q: “Candice, what activities did you take part in and what do you think you have learnt?”

Candice Riverol, Member, 1st. Belize Venture Unit

“We took part in many activities. We did a lot of physical activities. We did some group work together and a lot of cultural traditional shows, we did. We did the little traditional lion dance and the dragon, the dragon dance and we learn to do a lot of handicrafts. We got to meet a lot of people who were very friendly to us.”

Floyd Peters, Member 7th. Cayo Sacred Heart College Group

“The activities we participated in mostly, are basically what Candice said before. These activities can be learnt here, but I don’t think it will be easy to teach because some of them are difficult.”

Q: “Like which ones?”

Floyd Peters

“We have one for instance, we make you stand on a table and make you fall back stiff without bending any part of your body.”

Q: “What is the purpose of that?”

Floyd Peters

“It’s just to test if you have any courage in any of these things, if you are not afraid to fall.”

Q: “Did you enjoy your trip?”

Floyd Peters

“It was very fun.”

Q: “Xenia, what do you think you will remember the most from your trip to Taiwan?

Xenia Velasquez, Member, 1st. Belize Holy Redeemer Scouts

“What I think, I will remember the most from my trip is the good hospitable that they gave us. Upon arriving they gave us a hat and a waggle and a scarf that we were suppose to use on the entire jamboree. They treated us well. We were allowed to do many activities.”

Brandon Raymond, Member, 1st. Bze Holy Redeemer Scout Group

“I think the treatment that we got there. Cause they treated us like we were celebrities, cause everybody come shaking our hands. Well mostly I like the food their cause it is a little different from Belizean food. They don’t have pizzas; they have like rice and seaweed – lots of nice food, though.”

A total of fifteen thousand scouts from associations worldwide participated in the jamboree.
