Punta Negra improves eco-tourism attractions
It is one of the finest natural beaches in the entire country… but virtually nobody — inside or outside Belize — knows about it. That may begin to change, however, thanks to a project financed by the British High Commission. On Friday High Commissioner Tim David will inaugurate a new jetty and boardwalk at Punta Negra in the Toledo District. Built by volunteers from Trekforce Expeditions with twenty five thousand dollars in High Commission funds, the project, part of a larger upgrading of Payne’s Creek National Park, will be managed by the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment. Residents of Punta Negra Village hope that the new improvements, to be used to encourage bird watching and fly fishing in the nearby freshwater lake, will generate increased eco-tourism in the area. Punta Negra lies on the remote coast between Monkey River and Punta Gorda.
