Roaring Creek tops Camalote in women’s softball

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley so pull up for another dishing of Sports Monday.

Camalote Durley’s Crystal, after a perfect 10 and 0 regular season in the Cayo Softball competition, went into the Roaring Creek Stadium yesterday with a 1-2 up lead in the 3 game championship series against host team Roaring Creek, who made the playoffs with a 3 and 7 showing.

It’s the top of the first when Patricia Gladden gets tagged by Bridget Fuller. Leadoff batter Angela Andrews gives Camalote a 1-zip lead. But Gladden limits the damage to 1 run when Emogene Coye bounces to second baseman Harriet Trist who runs down the runner. In the bottom of the first, pitching sensation Kenisha Sutherland gives up 2 hits but gets out of trouble when Stephanie Wagner pops up to left fielder Shadine Salazar.

It’s the top of the fourth when power puncher Emogene Coye wallops Patricia Gladden for this in the park homerun and Camalote goes up 2-zip. Maybe Kenisha didn’t bring out the good stuff today because she gets flogged real hard by Josephine Meighan only to be rescued by good defense.

In the bottom of the seventh with a 2-zip lead Kenisha Sutherland runs into trouble. Stephanie Wagner beats out this bunt to begin the Grace Kennedy comeback. The very next batter Dorette Young smokes a single pass the infield to put runners at first and second. Sarita Salazar sends this ball back to Sutherland who doesn’t field it properly and the bases are loaded. Sutherland comes back with a big strike but Patricia Thimbrel, the catcher, comes up with the passball. Stephanie Wagner speeds home to give Roaring Creek its first run. The Camalote infield confers with the coach under the relentless pressure from Roaring Creek. Kenisha pitches to Belvia Gillett who smokes it pass first base and the spontaneous celebration begins.

In five meetings Roaring Creek/Grace Kennedy finally wins 1 in a 3-2 score but it’s a big one, which forces a final game three next Sunday at Camalote.

Stephanie Wagner, Roaring Creek

” I have a lot of friends who are with Camalote, right and every time I go to work they just tease me, saying that we can’t beat Camalote. So I tell them one of these days we’re going to do it, right. So we came out here with the mind that we’re going to beat Camalote today because they are always boasting that we cannot beat them. And we have that potential, you know. So we came out here with the mind that we’re not gonna stop until we win this game.”

J.A.

“Obviously you’re very excited.”

Stephanie Wagner

“Very excited, yeah.”

Q: “How big is this win for you?”

Stephanie Wagner

“It’s very big. This is like nationals or a game outside or something like that. This game is very big to me.”

Q: “Today’s ballgame was decided by pitching. Tell us about your role in that.”

Josephine Meighan, Pitcher, Roaring Creek

“Okay, my role in that James was just to keep the ball low and at the corners. What happen, that’s their weakness. They can only hit the ball if it is coming directly over the plate. So the corners, they will either have to stretch or move back. So once they reach up to the plate I give it an inside, and they have to draw back when it’s a strike. They cannot hit the ball once it’s an inside ball.”

Q: “Did you impress them enough today to have them know that next week you could take this title despite their 10 and 0 season?”

Josephine Meighan

“Yes, James. The last game was the same thing. They won the game in the bottom of the seventh last Sunday. It was a 2-nil game. It was the same thing. I pitched that game and it was the same. All we came out here was with a good game plan and that’s why we did it.”

Q: “My final question will be, will Roaring Creek/Grace Kennedy win the season?”

Josephine Meighan

“Of course. Of Course. We will come out with that same big heart to win them again.”

J.A.

“Kenisha, certainly today can only be a disappointment for you today.”

Kenisha Sutherland, Pitcher, Camalote

“Well you can win some and you can also lose some so you have to accept the loss.”

Q: “Kenisha, you have gone 10 and 0, what went wrong today?”

Kenisha Sutherland

“I don’t see no way where we went wrong. It was an excellent game, the team just play good.”

Q: “Going into next Sunday’s game, I mean certainly this is your first loss, a lot of teams cannot recover from a first loss so deep in the season. Can Camalote do that?”

Kenisha Sutherland

“We will recovery. We have to come back strong next week and win because we have to win the competition.”

In B Division softball play in the Cayo League yesterday Roaring Creek/ Grace Kennedy Jr. rallied pass Unitedville. We wanna say congratulations. We also wanna thank the very efficient Matilda Orellano for providing us with the official statistics.

Of course you know next week the big showdown comes. Two men enter one man leaves: Camalote versus Roaring Creek. We also want to remind football fans that all roads lead to Orange Walk this Sunday when national champion Juventus plays host to Municipal of Guatemala in the Cup Winners Cup Tournament as sponsored by CONCACAF. International football comes your way.

That’s it. Jah over all. I’m James Adderley.
