Civil Society Committee declines to investigate immigration
In other political news the group of N.G.O.s known as the Civil Society Steering Committee has declined a challenge issued by the People’s United Party to investigate allegations of fraud in the naturalization and voter registration of immigrants by the ruling U.D.P. While a similar investigation was carried out by an N.G.O. consortium prior to the 1993 election, the C.S.S.C. in its release, noted that at that time the request arose from various members of civil society and not merely from the political opposition. The release, however, went on to condemn any manipulation of immigration laws for political purposes and reiterated its support for the implementation of policies recommended by the 1993 N.G.O. report. Those recommendations, says the release, fell on deaf ears. The C.S.S.C. is made up of a number of N.G.O.s including BEST, the National Teacher’s Union, BOWAND and SPEAR.
