Murder in Dangriga; Douglas Gonzalez is Killed

Fitzroy Yearwood

As we said, there was a second murder that was recorded at the start of the weekend. On Friday night in Dangriga, shots rang out on the south riverside bridge area of town. Despite being mortally wounded by two persons who approached from behind and fired shots at him, Douglas Gonzalez made his way home before collapsing. Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood says that three persons were initially detained and released, but that a pair of brothers is believed to be responsible for the murder.

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, Communications Director, Belize Police Department

“Police responded to the residence of Douglas Gonzalez, where after reviewing surveillance camera, they saw what would have appeared to be an attack upon Mister Gonzalez. Several shots were fired at him causing his fatal injuries. We have since detained two brothers in connection with this murder, their homes have been searched and we have several other persons that their homes are being searched up to this time. The officers are saying that Mister Gonzalez was walking along the south riverside bridge approach when two men approached him from behind and fired a barrage of bullets at him. Mister Gonzalez managed to make it to his home where he collapsed. We know that the brothers were detained; actually it was three of them that were detained that same night. Their homes were searched and hopefully after the investigators put the evidence together, we should be having something soon to go on.”

“The motive of that murder?”

ASP Fitzroy Yearwood

“Like I said, he was walking along the southern bridge approach where he was fired upon from behind. Motive is not established. We know that he was the intended target from the way that he was approached. And like I said, we detained these brothers and hopefully if we have to re-detain them – all fingers are pointing in their direction at this time.”
