UNICEF & DigiWallet Partner to Provide Cash Transfers to Vulnerable Families
Today, UNICEF Belize and DigiWallet Limited formally signed off on a contract signalling the modernized provision of cash transfers to beneficiaries as part of social assistance. The collaboration between both entities began earlier this year as a solution to reach the most vulnerable families and children in Belize with digital cash transfer. Data shows that fifty-two percent of Belize’s population is on the verge of falling into full-scale deprivation and poverty. And the social protection program is looking at sustaining those families until they can flip into economic recovery. Through the partnership, a total of three hundred and sixty thousand U.S. dollars will be provided to families as income support distributed in four tranches.
Alison Parker, Country Representative, UNICEF
“This partnership today is a solid document. It’s not just an ordinary contract, but a very solid document that I think can serve many of the other agencies around the table. Globally, UNICEF is increasingly working to identify technology and innovative solutions to create opportunities and address key challenges to ensure that no child is left behind. And in order to reach the child, we need to reach the families, we need to reach the primary caregivers, or else we will be missing out on the most vulnerable. As a result, UNICEF has significantly intensified this collaboration with key partners at the community, sub-national and national level to ensure and provide development and expand our program through the rural and urban areas in the area of social protection.”
