Rematch of “one vote” election in Collet

They have both held ministerial portfolios in respective governments and in the 1993 general election the margin of victory was only one vote. Tonight, in the continuing series “Elections ’98” we focus on the contest in Collet.

“For the P.U.P. and myself the issue is to improve the standard of living of the people in this area, especially in the extensions; it’s terrible. Also I think primarily too, we must deal with jobs. Jobs is a very, very important, I think, issue in this campaign. It’s a matter of bread and butter issue. It’s a matter of getting jobs for our people, man. As you go to their homes you see the little red tag, no light, the water meter isn’t there. They’re sitting home. I think our party must as a priority get this economy going again; we must start back the train, so to speak then.”

“Patrick, it’s about trust. Who you can trust to represent the people of Collet division and that will deliver what has been promised. In Collet division the work will continue and the people have received a lot of development under the U.D.P. government under my stewardship. I have met the things that I have promised in the manifesto for Collet division, namely the construction of the day care, the completion of the Gwen Lizarraga High School. In the area of education, putting a lot of children back in school, helping to meet the cost of some of the extra fees and supporting them, all the way up to U.C.B.”

“Over the past five years, even though I was not elected, I have been in the area dealing also with my people and this is factual. She is just coming back to the area now after five years. You see the sign, we have lost faith in Faith.”

“And also about creating some jobs for our young people and we did that by training our young people to become employable because that was one of the ingredients lacking so that our young people in the Collet division were left out of development because the former area representative was so uncaring. He entered politics as a garment constructor and ended up being a contractor. He abandoned the needs of the people there and when I got into office I had to take up the slack and I did that without fear and favor. I helped everyone that needed help and I will continue to do that service to them.”
