Weekend sports with James Adderley

Story Picture
Good evening. I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. It was billed as a showcase for Belizean cyclist headed for international competition but as we go to the picture we’re wondering how come only 17 riders appear lined up at the start for yesterday’s 80 mile road race organized by the Belize Amateur Cycling Association.

Outside of Hattieville it’s Quinton Hamilton, Douglas Lamb and Ernest Meighan in control of the pace. But at the turning point James Frampton is in the lead being followed by Quinton Hamilton. The lead swells to include Orson Butler, Douglas Lamb and Leroy Betson on the way back to Belize City. Our next check finds Orson Butler out of the lead group trailing Francisco “The Animal” Flores. However, folks at tape time its Leroy Betson initiating the sprint but Orson Butler with the after burns tries to edge out a charging James Frampton who has to settle for second. Leroy Betson finishes third, Jeffrey Zelaya fourth, Mateo Cruz fifth, Francisco “The Animal” Flores sixth, Quinton Hamilton seventh and Douglas Lamb finishes eighth.

So what happened to all the riders that should have displayed their talent before wearing the Belize flag in international combat. Well stay tuned people, you’ll hear a lot more after the Belize Amateur Cycling Association convenes a special session later this week.

Now let’s head out to Holy Redeemer Parish Hall where the Belize Amateur Bodybuilding Association presented Universal Muscle Mania Saturday night. For sure the Michael Jackson look alike has done his homework as he might have stolen the show. We say that because there are only three athletes challenging for the Universal Muscle Mania title tonight.

Meet Roger Sutherland, making his first heavy weight appearance in a prime time package, and he has the brawn but his routine is a bit jerky. Then here is Deon Danderson and he displays real prime cuts but he might not display the mass he needs at this level of bodybuilding competition. And of course here is Joseph Obispo, the most successful, experienced and well-traveled athlete on this three-man roster. And maybe Joe’s still got it.

And in the pose down, Joe’s experience comes in big time but let’s join the awards ceremony.

“In third place, Roger Sutherland; second place, Deon Danderson and first place – Universal Muscle Mania ’98 – Joseph Obispo”

We say congratulations to all.

Turning to volleyball scene, here are the results of Saturday’s matchup at the City Centre. AMS Lady Jaguars got pass BH Paint Stars 15-03, 09-15, 15-12. Continental Flyers downed Belize Bank Bullets 21-19, 21-19. And Barclays Eagles got pass Central bank Jabirus 21-13, 21-09. In the nightcap it was Pepsi/ American Eagles prevailing over AMS Jaguars who couldn’t find where the City Centre was come game time.

That’s it. I’m James Adderley. Jah over all.
