Former Belmopan Mayor Says “Criminal Justice System is Failing”

Anthony Chanona

Following Thursday night’s peace walk and prayer vigil in Belmopan, our colleagues at Plus T.V. spoke with Anthony Chanona, a former Mayor of Belmopan and the Chairman of the People’s Constitutional Commission.  Chanona, in his remarks, stated that Belize’s criminal justice system is failing. He went on to say that the ongoing constitutional reform exercise presents an opportunity to fix this broken system.

Anthony Chanona, Former Mayor, Belmopan

“I would say in the name of the Ramnarace boys and the victims who have died across this country, I would take your question into this constitutional reform that is going on, the criminal justice system, and the third arm of our government, judiciary, is failing. And, it is not meant to impute hopelessness, but we now have a chance to review how we govern in these areas and we now have a time to make it better. We cannot leave it the way it is. It is broken, it is failing. So I will challenge all who might watch this interview to read the constitution. We are going to make it available. We are breaking it into five pillars and calling it user friendly.”
