Campos wins libel suit against Belize Times
Along with the pitched battle going on in the political arena Said Musa and the P.U.P. have their hands full in another venue: the Supreme Court. There are several dozen libel suits against the party newspaper, The Belize Times, which may come up over the next few months and today the court of Justice Nathan ruled in one of them. Minister of Mobilization Ruben Campos was awarded eleven thousand dollars in damages from the Times and the paper was also ordered to pay a thousand dollars in court costs. A story appearing in the Times in July of 1994 libelously implied that Campos was involved in the drug trade. The verdict in another libel case against former San Ignacio mayor Marconi Matus and P.U.P. party chairman Jorge Espat is expected shortly in the court of Justice George Meerabux.
