Troubles Ahead Due to Abundance of Local Onions Says Agriculture Minister
And, according to Minister Mai, those producers are pleased with the resolutions made in the meeting and the price they will be able to fetch for their produce during this year’s crop. But, there is a concern that the market will become oversaturated with local onions this year due to over production. Minister Mai told us more.
Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture
“But I will tell you that when the peak of the harvest comes in, there will be a problem because lots of onions are being harvested and the market can only absorb so much. We have purchased and supplied to the producing area’s cold storage facilities. It is never enough, because there are a lot of onions out there. And, that is because the bad weather in the country right now damaged a lot of the onions fields. Even so we will have a large amount of onions coming in at a certain time in the year and that will also lead to things like prices going down and farmers becoming very uncomfortable. But, that is the nature of the perishable product we are dealing with and the law of supply and demand.”
