Mayor Stands Behind Conferral of Key to the City to Dr. Andre Gray

That was Gray last Friday, a few hours before his credibility as an inventor was openly called to question and a stream of Facebook posts and comments added to his tarnished image. So today, News Five went back to Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner in the wake of the scandal that followed the symbolic handing over of the key to the city. The mayor said that City Hall did do a fact-check on Gray before the ceremony, and that the city still stands today in support of Gray.

“We checked it out, right, we really checked it out. We felt that bestowing a key to the city to an accomplished black Belizean brother who has achieved much in the US, irrespective of the inventions or the other matter, we felt that the information we received gave us that comfort, so-to-speak, of giving the keys to a Belizean, a Belizean brother. The question is, and when we went over the internet, we found not one negative matter or any sort of negative story in respect to Dr. Gray. It’s very unfortunate that the only negative story will be the story coming out of Belize. So the question is who or what is driving this frenzy, where we have Belizeans bringing down another Belizean who has done a lot intellectually abroad. Again we stick by the story that there’s no negative or any stories out there refuting the doctor’s claims so it’s a legal matter. My bigger question is who or what is driving this narrative where Belizeans are bringing down another Belizean. It’s ridiculous.”
