Young Belizean attends prestigious music camp

She carries a name which is synonymous with music in Belize, but it was not her name which earned Natasha Young a place in one of the world’s finest music schools; it was her talent. Arreini Palacio reports.

“you can really like put your soul and mind to it and express yourself in different music.”

She may not consider herself a genius but Natasha Young’s expression and dedication to music has taken her to one of the oldest and most prestigious international music camps: Interlochen National Music School. According to the fifteen-year-old, she is more than proud to be the very first Belizean to attend.

“I had to do an audition and send a tape of me playing the piano and violin but I will only be going for a month and playing only the violin.

Well I am really proud and excited and I hope that my trip will let young musicians, you know, people from Belize to go for their dreams and achieve their dreams and maybe they can attend the camp also and to work hard.

Well at the summer camp I expect that I will develop the skills that I have and hopefully that they will teach me to improve on my skills and I think that it will be a great time there.”

Natasha Young leaves for Michigan on the seventeenth of July. Arreini Palacio for News Five.

Natasha is being sponsored by the Belize Student Performing Arts Foundation, American Airlines and the Belize Arts Council. She is the daughter of Colville Young Jr. and his wife Alice and granddaughter of the Governor General and Lady Young.
