Coral Cay/U.C.B. offer SCUBA scholarships

Story Picture
Fifteen young Belizeans will this summer be the lucky recipients of scholarships to learn SCUBA diving. The program, offered by Coral Cay Conservation and U.C.B., with assistance from the Fisheries Department and Belize Texaco Limited, is the fourth of its kind to take place in Belize City. The program is divided into two sessions and will have the students training first in the confined waters of the Belize Biltmore Plaza swimming pool before advancing to the open seas off Calabash Caye Field Station on Turneffe Atoll. Henry Lanza, Project Manager for Coral Cay Conservation in Belize City, said this year’s program promises to be both informative and exciting.

“Well we are hoping to give Belizeans a first try of getting an opportunity to go out and learn how to dive. As you may know there is a lot of courses being taught all over the country, you know, to SCUBA dive, but it’s very expensive. So what the company is hoping to do, I mean the real objective of the company is to provide the sustainable use of the coral reef and obviously an awareness to SCUBA diving.”

Q: “For those interested in getting involved with the program, what should they do?”

Henry Lanza

“Okay what we have done is that we have in the advertiser that we put out, we have indicated that, you know, if you need more information they can give us a call at our head office here at U.C.B. or at the University College of Belize and ask for the director and we will be able to give them information about the program.

What the persons need to do is fill out an application form and after that we will obviously look into getting or inviting them into an interview session and that will decide who will get the scholarship.”

Those students interested in the dive program are asked to gather at the Belize Biltmore Plaza swimming pool for a try dive session this Sunday, July twelfth from nine in the morning. Lanza says this session will be held to give the students an idea of what SCUBA diving is all about while at the same time giving the instructors an idea of which students are most qualified for a scholarship. For more information on the dive scholarship program, you are asked to call 32787.
