Police chief recovering in Melchor attack

In a follow-up to another major crime, this one just across the Guatemalan border, authorities in Melchor say wounded police chief Carlos Sanchez remains hospitalized but his condition has been upgraded to stable. The wounded driver of his patrol car, however, is listed in critical condition. Both men were injured when two teenagers went on a shooting and grenade spree that left three people dead on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the officer in charge of the Benque police, Assistant Inspector Mark Flowers, is scheduled to meet with his Guatemalan colleagues on Wednesday in Melchor. That meeting, which will also be attended by visiting officials from Spain, will discuss police cooperation between the two countries as well as the coordination of joint operations along the Belize-Guatemala border.
