P.U.P. leader discusses poverty in Libertad meeting

There was actually some weekend activity around Belize other than crime. The political action focussed in the Corozal District as the People’s United Party continued to campaign as if the election could be called any day.
The motorcade wound its way through the villages of the north before winding up in Libertad and the convening of another people’s Assembly.
Said Musa, Leader, P.U.P.
“Today, after three more years of a cruel and uncaring regime in power, forty to fifty percent of Belizeans are living in poverty. That is totally unacceptable, and the next P.U.P. government is determined to take decisive action towards our goal of eliminating poverty in Belize.”
“Eliminating Poverty in Belize” was the main topic of discussion. According to P.U.P. party leader, Said Musa, despite the fact that the U.D.P. government pledged to address the problem of poverty in Belize, little has been done.
Said Musa
“At the World Summit for Social Development, held in Copenhagen in 1995, the Belize government gave a commitment to direct our economy to meet human needs more effectively and to promote equality of opportunity for all, essential steps towards eradicating poverty. But when we study the actions of the U.D.P. government, however, we must conclude that they have done everything possible to violate those sacred commitments. Rather than expanding employment opportunities, they deliberately slowed down the economic train that was moving ahead under the People’s United Party and instead created massive unemployment.”
Musa told the gathering that the time has come to set Belizeans free and reassured the gathering that a P.U.P. government will put the country back on a road to economic democracy with social justice.
Said Musa
“The P.U.P. model views the role of the state as an instrument to facilitate economic growth in partnership with the private sector, while ensuring that the poor benefit from development. The P.U.P. believes that development only occurs when people, especially the poor and disadvantaged, benefit from economic growth. Our low tax, job-creating policies will enhance our society’s ability to produce and provide a higher standard of living for our people. Our growth economics will ensure that our goals become attainable.”
The P.U.P.’s People’s Assembly was the eighth to take place since the party started the public meetings in March.
The next People’s Assembly is scheduled for July seventeenth in Belmopan. A date for the election is expected to be announced by the Prime Minister shortly, either at this Friday’s final meeting of the House or at Sunday’s special U.D.P. convention at Bird’s Isle. The latest gossip from the political rumor mill puts the likely big day as Wednesday September second.
