A Virtual Session of the Court on a Saturday

In an effort to dispose of the case as quickly as possible, on Saturday, January twenty-eighth, Justice Antoinette Moore held a virtual court proceeding. It is not common, but it can be done. It was used to present statements from witnesses who the court believes do not have to take the stand, but their statements were simply entered into evidence. Laddie’s family was also allowed to tune into the virtual session. News Five spoke with Attorney Dickie Bradley and Laddie’s father, Emil Bradley, about the session and how it went.

“On Saturday, again, another first for the trial is that the judge, who is the most hard working judge we have in the country, has suggested to the two sides if it is okay previously that we all come and worked on Saturday and the fact that happened.  In this case, because the crown has really, the prosecutor has really done his job in lining up his witnesses in making the scenario as clear as possible, we were able to deal with quite a number of witnesses through the virtual magic of the internet and the computer. Now I’ll tell you this, there are eighteen witnesses in the trial. At least eight or nine, it is agreed between the defense attorney and the prosecuting attorney that there is no need to bring the witness physically into the court because what they will say is just a formal, officially piece of statement. If I am the person that arrested you or I am the one that raised the charge in the court and I read you your rights and so, we have no question for those witnesses. Now, we continue with actually witnesses who will come into the court physically, give their testimony and be questioned from the defense side of the matters.”

“They did have the virtual and they sent out the link so we as the family they logged us in and we were able to listen to the different statements from the six witnesses.”

“This is day three of the trial taking place. How do you feel about the process?”

“It’s going good so far except for couple little question. I mean trust for the judiciary system is not all there right now. The conviction rate is so low so little technicalities, little questions that Mister Selgado is asking can lead to where me as an ex-police officer can know where. But so far, everything is going good so far so we just have to wait and see what happens.”
