World Cup play begins tomorrow
Football fans who are not sure where to find their favorite World Cup team will get a little break these next few weeks, courtesy of Channel Five and the Caribbean Broadcasting Union. As was the case with the Atlanta Olympics, the broadcast rights to the competition are owned by the C.B.U., but other broadcasters and cable operators are expected to ignore the C.B.U. copyright and run some or all of the sixty four matches anyway. For those who want to tune in to the authorized version, Channel Five will run at least five first round matches, including Wednesday morning’s opener between Brazil and Scotland. The inaugural ceremonies kick off at 8:30 a.m. Other matches to be aired include South Korea versus Mexico on Saturday and Jamaica against Croatia on Sunday. Commentary will be provided by a team of Caribbean sportscasters. Those sponsors interested in supporting the effort are invited to call Channel Five’s Marketing Department.
